Trying Out Antonio's Coffee and Bibingka at SM Megamall

We were in SM Megamall to buy original Epson inks for our printer. Well, you know how it is, you to go the mall intending to buy something specific but you end up aimlessly going in and out stores just for the heck of it. That’s what hubby and I exactly did until we got a bit hungry and started looking for coffee and something to eat.

We found a kiosk in the middle of the 5th floor of Megamall called Antonio’s Coffee and Bibingka. I’m not really a big bibingka fan, but I am a coffee addict and I really needed a caffeine fix so we decided to try it.

The first thing I noticed was that they were offering Puto Bumbong alongside the Bibingka.  Puto Bumbong is a Philippine kakanin that is distinctly purple in color while the Bibingka is a rice cake that is soft and spongy in texture and cooked over coals. Both Philippine desserts are often associated with Christmas since they are often seen during Christmas Season when they are sold outside churches after Simbang Gabi.

Puto Bumbong is sold at P60 per order. Too bad they were already sold out when we wanted to buy some. For the bibingka, you can choose to order the special, super special or the original variety. Then you can choose whether to get the small, medium or large size. We decided to try the original Bibingka (P115) since according to the salesperson, this was the best seller.

The bibingka was served warm on top of banana leaves. It was big enough for two people to share. Since we ordered for take out, it was placed in a box to preserve the shape and the flavor.  When we tried it, it was really soft and fluffy. The big slices of salted eggs (itlog na maalat) on top was not only pretty to look at but it was really tasty.  Just before it was served, margarine was generously placed on top that melted almost immediately.  Of course what made this dish even more yummy was the fresh grated coconut scattered on top. Heaven! Berto and I loved it!

Antonio’s offers a wide choice of drinks to go with your snack. They have traditional Filipino faves like hot choco tablea and hot salabat  or you can opt for the hot tea. For coffee drinkers like me, Antonio’s do not disappoint. They have hot, frappe, and iced coffee varieties. Too bad though, I think their coffee cup could look a bit better than just the generic kind that you buy in the grocery stores. Plus, (at the time we ordered) they didn’t have a cover for take out orders.  Clumsy coffee drinkers who order freshly brewed coffee can burn themselves with the scalding coffee if not careful. Ok, that clumsy coffee drinker was me, and my hand was indeed burned.  I asked the sales person why didn’t she warn that they didn’t have a cup cover, she just smiled apologetically. If I had known, I wouldn’t have ordered the hot coffee.

I love that you can now buy Puto Bumbong  and Bibingka in the mall anytime, whenever you feel the craving for it, no need to wait for Christmas!
